If your clinic stops functioning the moment you turn off your phone, you don’t have a business. You have a "Hero Tax" problem.
In Abu Dhabi’s competitive medical landscape, being the "smartest person in the room" is an operational liability. Here is how I’m transitioning our operations from Hero-Led to System-Driven:
- The 80% Rule: If a team member can do a task 80% as well as I can, they own it. Period.
- Automated Guardrails: We use AI, AppSheet and SmartSuite to handle routine approvals. If the data fits the criteria, the system moves it forward. No Director intervention needed.
- The 'Vacation Test': I regularly step back from specific workflows to see where the friction points emerge. Those friction points are my next automation targets.
- Documentation as Culture: If it’s not in the SOP, it doesn’t exist. This ensures quality remains consistent across the UAE, regardless of who is on shift.
As Andrew Carnegie famously said:
No person will make a great business who wants to do it all himself.
The Leadership Lesson: Your value isn't measured by how much you do, but by how well the clinic performs when you do nothing.
